# OpenVPN (OSS) Support

## Introduction

Before asking questions on *open source OpenVPN* support channels, please try to solve your problem yourself first. It is recommended to:

- Read [How To Ask Questions The Smart Way](http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html) by Eric Raymond.
- Familiarize yourself with [Netiquette](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette) and [Chatiquette](http://www.livinginternet.com/r/ru_chatq.htm).

A common mistake on IRC is leaving too soon after asking a question. Please keep your IRC client open for a sufficient amount of time as responses might be delayed due to different time zones. Once you have done your homework, feel free to ask your question. For those looking to contribute to *developing* OpenVPN (OSS), start by reading [this article](wiki:DeveloperDocumentation).

## User Support

### Documentation

Before asking any questions, consider checking these resources:

- [Official documentation](https://openvpn.net/community-resources/)
- [Wiki documentation](https://community.openvpn.net)

If further information is needed, these sources can be helpful:

- [How to: Request Help](https://forums.openvpn.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=22603) (Forum posts)
- [openvpn-users mailing list archives](https://sourceforge.net/p/openvpn/mailman/openvpn-users/)
- [openvpn-devel mailing list archives](https://sourceforge.net/p/openvpn/mailman/openvpn-devel/)
- [Known bugs](https://github.com/OpenVPN/openvpn/issues)

Before reporting a new bug, please refer to [Tester Documentation](https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/TesterDocumentation).

### User IRC Channel

The easiest way to get help with generic OpenVPN (OSS) questions is through the IRC channel: [#openvpn on libera.chat](irc://irc.libera.chat:6697/#openvpn).

### User Support Forums

Forums are another good way to get help:

- [OpenVPN Forums](https://forums.openvpn.net)

You need to [create an account](https://community.openvpn.net/register) to participate. Use the site search feature for effective searching:

```
site:forums.openvpn.net your desired search
```

### User Mailing List

The traditional support method is via the [openvpn-users mailing list](http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=48978). Subscribe to it to ask questions. Archives can be found [here](https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/MailingListArchives).

## Developer Support

### Developer IRC Channel

For developer queries, use the IRC channel: [#openvpn-devel at libera.chat](irc://irc.libera.chat:6697/#openvpn-devel). Active developer hours are usually between 9 AM and 10 PM UTC. Remember, a registered nickname and password are required to join. Instructions for registering are [here](https://libera.chat/guides/registration).

### Developer Mailing List

The [openvpn-devel mailing list](http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=48978) is the main communication channel for developers. Subscribe to stay updated. Archives are available [here](wiki:MailingListArchives).

### Security Issues List

Report potential security issues to the private OpenVPN security list: security at openvpn dot net. Please refrain from sending non-security related messages to this list.

## OpenVPN Access Server Support

### Access Server Support Ticket System

For support with the OpenVPN Access Server product or OpenVPN Connect client, use the [support ticket system](https://openvpn.net/index.php/login.html) available at openvpn.net. An account is required to access support.

### Access Server Forum Boards

For less urgent requests, consider using the forums, especially the [Access Server forum](https://forums.openvpn.net/access-server-f24.html). You need to [create an account](https://community.opevnpn.net/register) to participate.
/dev/null .. Pages/Tap rename script.md

# Introduction

[This script](http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.network.openvpn.devel/4975) was first sent to the openvpn-devel mailinglist.

# Description

I was looking for a scripted way to rename the tap network node to make it easier for installing my clients. Attached is the batch file I used to rename my network node. I still have to answer yes to two questions but that is much easier to instruct someone to do. This was tested on Windows 7 but it should work on older versions of windows (with XP it should work even better) but I haven't tried it yet.

Basically, what this script does is as follows: it dumps the content of

```
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
```

and looks for the "TAP-Win32 Adapter V9" `DriverDesc` and matches it up with its `NetCfgInstanceId`. It then creates a reg file that modifies the

```
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\[NetCfgInstanceId]\Connection\Name
```

registry entry to the name you have in the client.ovpn config file. Could Microsoft have picked a more obscure naming convention?
