how did you start openvpn, on which os and how did you enter the username?

And there is no OpenVPN Connect 2.4RC1 version.

When testing on my setup a username with space ("test user") works without problems. Your problem is probably on the openvpn server and the method you are using to authenticate.

if you still think it is the client please provide a log from a config with verb 4 so we can see what username is send to OpenVPN from the UI.

Tue Dec 06 17:42:50 2016 us=597805 MANAGEMENT: CMD 'username "Auth" "p.de lamarre"'

that log shows that the username is correctly sent to OpenVPN. I am almost certain that the problem is on the server side.
