#638 closed Bug / Defect (fixed)
64 bit installer will not uninstall 32bit previous version
Reported by: | Gert Döring | Owned by: | Samuli Seppänen |

Priority: | major | Milestone: | release 2.5.3 |
Component: | Generic / unclassified | Version: | OpenVPN git master branch (Community Ed) |
Severity: | Not set (select this one, unless your'e a OpenVPN developer) | Keywords: | |

Description
Installed a 64bit "master" installer yesterday for testing on a win7/64 system that had a 32bit installation beforehand. Net result: two openvn installtions, one in "\program files\openvpn" and one in "\program files (x86)\openvpn".
Of course this is an operator error, but we *do* de-install a "same-bit-size" openvpn version if encountered beforehand - so maybe we should offer "found 32 bit installation. uninstall? yes/no".

So, what to do about this ticket? Close? Is this fixed with the MSI installer (= what does the MSI installer do on a 64 bit windows system if there is a 32 bit OpenVPN already installed)?

I suggest we just close this. It was created five years ago and nobody has chimed in here "I want this". I'm not sure what MSI does, but again, the demand for this feature does not seem high.

In the community meeting on 28th Dec 2015 it was decided to warn the user about an existing 32-bit installation. This is easier than doing a full uninstall of a different bitness OpenVPN, which would warrant a similar warning box also.
